birthday ONSLAUGHT: the wishening.

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 17, 2010, 9:21 AM
Thanks to the birthday battalion, that was an incredibly pleasant thing to wake up to this morning. : )

Another valiant year-long battle with age, LOST. But it was a glorious defeat this year, let me tell you. And all the better now thanks to you guys.

While I'm here! A big 'ol happy holidays to the lot of you! This is my absolute favorite time of the year (even more so since moving to Texas.. we don't get any snow that needs shoveling outside of a blue moon), for the weather, the festivities, just the whole atmosphere of it all. And I'm a big giant sappy sap who actually likes Christmas songs. It makes me all warm and noggy inside. Just can't help myself.

Though I'll admit I've been spoiled to the whole new years celebration after spending my last one in Düsseldorf. Whole freaking sky lit up with fireworks over the Rhine, fireworks in the STREETS, it was nuts. Maybe I just have to sniff out an impressive display here in texanland. Put that 'everything is bigger' slogan to the test. We'll see.

Hope this year treated you folks well.

..out of curiousity.. what's the best food you eat around the holidays? Stuffing in my opinion!

Baklava is my absolute favorite food around the holidays.

And ham.

But mostly the baklava. Phyllo dough (it's paper thin) layered with butter and sugar and cinnamon sugar. It also has finely crushed almonds layered in with it, but I prefer it without.

And then, to top it all off, after baked, a near-boiling simple syrup (water with sugar and vanilla extract boiled together, basically) is poured over the top.
Let it cool (just enough not to burn your mouth... or not), and it's just amazing.

Favorite thing. For sure.

I'm thrilled to hear that you had such a wonderful birthday. I hope that your Christmas was fabulous as well. :) My favorite food of this season? Not so much a food, but I'm a huge sucker for Egg Nog, especially Pumpkin Spice flavored. :giggle:

Super belated birthday wishes and happy holidays, Endling!

Christmas baking has been crazy-fun. My sis found a magazine filled with holiday-themed cookie recipes and we’re trying to make as many as we can and giving them out to friends and stuff. We did the second batch of them last night and oh man. DX Managing all those cookies made me feel like a Keebler elf.

Best food to eat?

Thanksgiving Tacos. Or German food, because that's what you're supposed to eat during the holidays, I guess.

I gotta say though, stuffing is indeed the best. Except when they put raisins in it! So terrible!

(Happy Birthday by the way!)

Happy belated birthday, and Merry Christmas!

Hm, Texas things to do... Its hard to think of something specific. Most smaller cities and towns have parades and pageants. Houston has a lot of cool stuff too: [link]

Moody Gardens and The Nutcracker have to be my top picks.

TAMALES. Not to mention menudo, cabrito and tons of other mexican foods.

The positive thing of having a border with Texas is we also get the stuffing, the turkeys and the delicious overfilled carb food

Stuffing is always a classic. I was sad one time that my mom sent my sister home with all of it. D:

Tamales are good. Masa, red chile beef, and a black olive in the center. : D They are love and awesome. And good snack food with the left overs. Just grab one, unwrap it, and munch.

Chinese food--it has to be take out--with eggnog. The eggnog is key, and must be drank with the chinese food, otherwise it's just chinese food /and/ eggnog.

As for favorite dish for the season, My dad makes this delicious Italian tomato fish stew thing every year for Christmas eve and it is just the bomb! I look forward to it all year every year!

and in my opinion, the best holiday food is a slowly cured brown sugar glazed ham (with the bone in it) surrounded by fresh pineapple with a side of creamy mashed sweet potatoes.

Well happy belated birfday, sir!

My favorite food to eat over the holidays... well it's a tie between three things: my gramma's fudge, her ginger snaps, and my apple-pear pie. Damn that's some good stuff.
